The total number of registered voters in the district has skyrocketed in recent years: The number nearly doubled between 2010 and 2014, from 3,400 to 6,500. Despite the high turnout last year, the number of voters likely to turn out this year is likely to be significantly lower than that. The closer-than-expected margin between Johnson and Solis is why the election seems to be more important to Chicago, and not just to the 26th Ward.
